About Default Mode

Default Mode emerged from a passion for discovering what human beings are truly capable of. Beginning through a personal journey of healing and recovery, the exploration gradually expanded into a broader investigation of the patterns, principles, and forces that shape our lives.

The project explores the ways we learn, heal, create, adapt, connect, and transform. It asks questions about the relationship between mind and body, individual and community, nature and culture, science and intuition, consciousness and everyday life.

To do this requires crossing many schools of thought, histories, traditions, disciplines, and lived experiences. It is an ongoing process of studying, practicing, experimenting, listening, sharing, and participating. Slowly uncovering the common threads that weave through them all. Default Mode exists as a place to collect and share those threads through ideas, offerings, practices, stories, conversations, and tools.

The name “Default Mode” refers to how, as humans, we operate in our defaulted patterns, often totally unaware. and to the Default Mode Network (DMN) of the brain, a network associated with day-dreaming and getting lost in thought, where often our sense of identity, memory, self-reflection and also imagination lives. It is useful, but it becomes destructive when we are unable to bring ourselves into present awareness and understanding. The project in a way, is a thesis-like understanding of how these patterns are formed, how they influence our experience, and how awareness can help us consciously reshape them.

At the intersection of philosophy, psychology, physiology, spirituality, and human behaviour is a fascination with the relationship between our inner and outer worlds. Much of this work is rooted in the understanding that meaningful change requires both. Working from the inside out and the outside in. Learning how awareness, compassion, accountability, and acceptance can reshape our internal landscape and ripple outward into our relationships, communities, and lives. Understanding these dynamics and the patterns that govern them has been a lifelong pursuit shared by countless teachers, cultures, and traditions.

Part of this path has also been shaped by a desire to contribute to a more compassionate and liberated world. The belief is that one of the most powerful forms of resistance to oppression is radical self-healing and love. learning how to remain connected, aware, creative, and well in the midst of everything. To reclaim our bodies, our attention, our imagination, our vitality, and our capacity to shape our lives and support others. With this, we don’t fall into the traps of control.

The revolution is evolution.

At its heart is a simple understanding: we are our own greatest healers, teachers, and guides. Many of the challenges we face arise from disconnection from ourselves, from one another, and from the natural systems we belong to. Likewise, many of the pathways toward healing, growth, creativity, and resilience emerge through remembering those relationships and learning how to work with them. Healers are not those who heal others, but those who help others find their own way back to wholeness.

Building both a network of knowledge and healing experiences seemed like a natural progression, as all wisdom leads from the combination of knowledge and experience.

To spend so much time learning from others, being trained and coached, and building a recipe of a program that synthesizes all the methodologies into a specific format of healing, building an architecture of this to be able to share and offer for others in a compassionate and safe setting for their journeys. Along side, of space to share community resources and community engagement methods, as healing is a team sport, and is not meant to be done in isolation or just behind 1:1 closed doors. every element serves a purpose and is important.

wAYS WE cAN ENGAGE IN INTENTIONAL HEALING

Ultimately, this project is an invitation to become more conscious participants in our own lives. To better understand the patterns shaping us, to develop the capacity to influence them, and to cultivate greater alignment between who we are, how we live, and what we contribute to the world.

To grease the hinges of a long-closed door, inviting the opening of what has always been there. To awaken dormant abilities, forgotten knowledge, and deeper ways of relating to ourselves, each other, and the living world. To remember that change is not something to fear, but something we are designed for.

Lineage and Shared Knowledge

Many of these teachings come from cultures and traditions that have held long-term deep relationships with the body, with nature, and with consciousness itself. This space does not claim ownership over those teachings. It is encouraged to work with these practices with your own sense of honouring, morality and curiosity of the origins of teachings. With that in mind, it is also just an encouragement to shape shift, create, collaborate, share and orchestrate your own designs. With the understanding that healing is shared, that wisdom belongs to all of us, and that learning from one another is part of how we restore ourselves and the world.

When possible, it is important to uplift the voices of the carriers of these lineages and teachings, their leadership, and their continued cultural sovereignty.

AL’s story & Background

About Al

My path into this work began through a personal journey of healing, recovery, and transformation.

After studying engineering and working in strategy and operations across corporate and non-profit environments, life took a hard but necessary turn through a brain injury, chronic illness/Injury, sobriety, gender transition, and the need to completely reimagine myself and my life.

I worked with countless practitioners and explored approaches ranging from neuroscience and rehabilitation to somatics, spirituality, intuitive practices, plant medicine, and traditional healing systems, always searching for the common threads between them. Each offering had something to teach, even those that were less successful in healing. I found that the practitioners who inspired hope, took a more holistic view, and were open to trying different approaches were often the most effective. I also discovered the power of shared community compassionate spaces, and studying lineages and philosophers that offered collective wisdom and space holding.

I learned that many of the ways I had been formally treating myself, through prescriptions, OTC medications, and quick-fix body manipulation therapies, were actually repressing me from reaching more advanced stages of wellness. I had to move away from these paths and toward one focused on the reconditioning of the total self. Learning how to react differently. Learning how to retrain patterns of holding, moving, thinking, and being.

Part of my challenge was also becoming unstuck from what society often defines as healthy, productive, and successful, but can actually become a recipe for burnout. Constant doing and Constant striving. Always pushing exertion on the body while at work, play or the gym. Never truly resting or engaging the body’s natural restorative states, or coordinating with sleep, cortisol cycle or other inner system cylces. The practices that taught me how to slow down, soften, and release not only helped me heal, but ultimately made me stronger, more resilient, and more fit.

The deeper I went, the more I realized that the sensitivities and struggles I experienced were not unique to me. My injury simply made the signals impossible to ignore. The things that nourished me helped me grow. The things that depleted me caused my system to wither. Through this process, I began to see how our environments, relationships, beliefs, habits, attention, stress, purpose, and sense of connection shape our wellbeing.

What became clear was that these forces affect all of us. Most people simply experience them differently. Where I received immediate physical feedback through symptoms, others may experience the same underlying dynamics through anxiety, emotional patterns, chronic tension, burnout, illness, relationship struggles, or a loss of meaning. This sparked a fascination with understanding how these patterns form, how they influence our lives, and what conditions allow people to heal, adapt, and thrive.

And so there became a sense of urgency and duty to document and understand all of this. A deeper purpose to inspire others to pursue this type of awareness and understanding. To help save our bodies and our minds, and ideally contribute to changing the planet for the better. Because when we find alignment, we often discover a love for ourselves, for others, and for this world that makes it difficult to cause harm.

Alongside this journey, I have always been an artist, athlete, creator, and explorer. Curiosity has been one of my greatest teachers. Following it led me through psychology, philosophy, physiology, dream work, somatics, mindfulness, neuroscience, intuitive development, mythology, creative arts, nature-based learning, and countless conversations with people from different backgrounds and traditions. Each doorway seemed to open another.

One of the greatest surprises of this journey was discovering the power of intuition, symbolism, subconscious intelligence, and the deeper layers of awareness that often exist beyond ordinary thinking. After years studying systems, analytics, and probability, I became equally fascinated by the parts of human intelligence that are difficult to measure, yet impossible to ignore.

This eventually evolved into the work I now offer through Somatic-Intuitive Journeys. A blend of body-based healing, subconscious exploration, intuitive awareness, education, and practical tools for growth and transformation.

A space that merges what i found alot of practices held in siloed isolations:

• 1:1 talk space holding

• An offering of healing to be received

• Knowledge exchange and coaching

• Integration and ongoing care practices

It has been a privilege to witness people reconnect with themselves, find clarity, move through challenges, and discover capacities they did not know they had.

Most importantly, thank you to all of the teachers, guides, friends, sitters, communities, and strangers who offered wisdom, support, challenge, hope, and unconditional love along the way.

ALWAYS A STUDENT

These days, you can find me doing strategy work for non-profits, scheming and planning activism through community organizing, studying, participating in experiences, spending endless time in nature, and offering my somatic services.
